We Launched Velamini at a Hackathon — Here's How It Went

April 1, 2026 wasn't a joke — it was launch day.

We built Velamini to give African businesses and professionals their own AI-powered platform: smart agents for customer service, personal productivity tools, Gmail automation, data insights, and more. And the place we chose to go live for the first time was a hackathon.

The Day Started Early

The venue filled up fast. Founders, developers, student builders, and investors gathered to see what teams had been building. The energy was electric — that specific kind of excitement you only get when real products are being shown to real people for the first time.

We set up our demo station, opened our laptops, and took a deep breath.

The Demo

When our turn came, we walked the judges and audience through Velamini live — no slides, no pre-recorded video. A real account, real AI responses, real data.

We showed:

The room paid attention. Questions came in fast.

What We Learned

Launching in public — in front of people who can ask hard questions — is the best forcing function. A few things stood out:

People immediately got the value. When someone saw the Gmail auto-draft generate a reply that actually sounded like them, they leaned forward. That moment told us we were building something real.

Africa-first resonated. Several attendees flagged that most AI tools aren't built with African timezones, languages, or business contexts in mind. Velamini is. That differentiation landed.

Speed matters more than polish. We had rough edges. Some features weren't pixel-perfect. Nobody cared — they wanted to know if it worked, and it did.

What's Next

The hackathon was the beginning, not the destination. Since launch we've been moving fast:

If you were at the event — thank you for the questions, the energy, and the encouragement. And if you're discovering Velamini for the first time through this post: welcome. We're just getting started.
